The objectives of this project is the development of safety and reliability technologies required to the next generation hydrogen stations to improve public acceptance to local government and local residents toward the full commercialization period of 2025. Toray Industries has been developing highly-efficient electrochemical hydrogen compressor having the advantage of low-noise and small-footprint. In FY2016, small H2 pump cell for high-pressure compression was designed, and high pressure-resistance of the cell at more than 70MPa was demonstrated by burst test. By use of the designed H2 pump cell, newly-developed HC membrane achieved H2 compression at 10MPa, while PFSA baseline membrane did not due to its deformation at high pressure. Toray will further investigate their electricity efficiency to elucidate the HC membrane advantage, and will continue further development/optimization of membrane electrode assembly, cell and operation condition for demonstration of highly-efficient 35MPa compression.
