Despite high expectation for manufacturing innovation triggered by additive manufacturing, its outlook is still unclear. To realize the innovation through the technology, this project will overcome the obstacles in front of that. In the project, we will make three improvements in process capability, product concept and design tool. Results of 2016 FY are following.

1. Improvement in process capability
Aiming at process of super engineering plastic, process of Poly-phenylene Sulfide (PPS) as a low-end super engineering plastic was developed. A high tensile strength of 80MPa was obtained. Additionally, a supplemental process that allows laser sintering to build an object of a material on top of another object made of different material was developed.
2. Improvement in product concept
A high style sport prosthesis as a milestone product to indicate the strength of AM technology, was prototyped with selective laser sintering, an AM technology. After a variety of mechanical tests were performed to confirm its technical safeness, a mechanical strength that stands sprint of a real Paralympian. A prosthesis that is colored and having AM oriented stylish structured was prototyped.
3. Improvement in design tool
A digital design tool was developed and tested by a variety of technicians from an apprentice to an expert. Thanks to the improved GUI function of the tool and AM technology, their labor times reduced to 30%. To improve delight of the technicians and the wearers, a database for relationship between comfort of the wearer and the shape of the prosthesis was developed.
