ABSTRACT
In this research, we aim to develop the groundwater observation well system for using groundwater as a large-scale heat source for open-loop ground thermal energy utilization systems in the metropolitan region.
Because the past excessive pumping of groundwater caused severe ground subsidence in Osaka area, it is necessary to use the groundwater under appropriate management. The observation well system will be effective to manage groundwater and promote the open-loop type ground thermal energy utilization systems in Osaka.

1. The validity of the observation well system:
We considered the validity of the observation well system from its structures and building techniques with low price and high function.
It is desired that the groundwater environment can be widely researched by using the multi-layer observation well system developed in this research. It is possible to observe multiple aquifers at only one well, namely to save the well installation space.
In addition to that, the total cost will be reduced because the necessary term for construction can be reduced in this case.

2. The data analysis and consideration of the aquifer characteristics which is available to use groundwater continuously:
In order to use groundwater continuously, we have to understand of the distribution of each aquifer. Borehole database can be obtained the distribution of subsurface geological condition.
Sandy gravels and marine clay layers are alternated with 200m depth in the central part of Osaka City. The shallower underground structure mostly seems to be flat and the aquifers continuously and widely spread in the western part of the Uemachi terrace, so that the stable groundwater supply can be expected in this area.
In addition to that, several geological situations are homogeneous from Osaka station area to Namba, namely the aquifers are stably continuous. So it is effective to use the groundwater for ground thermal energy in these areas, because of not only the aquifer characteristics but also the population concentration, large amount of energy must be required.
