1. Developments on the optimized backwash technology and the heat exchange unit for groundwater use

Demonstration tests of the open-loop geothermal heat pumps system with the developing heat exchange unit for groundwater use have been performed to confirm the clogging process of injection wells and assess the efficiency of the developing system at 3 sites with different underground settings. The clogging occurred 2 months after the starting of the test at Yokkaichi site. Although a backwash of the pumping rate 150 L/min for 5.5 hours improved the maximum injection rate from 50 L/min to 85 L/min, this did not reach the initial value of 150 L/min. The SCOPs of the developing system are 4.1 and 4.5 at Yokkaichi and Nagoya sites, respectively. These are well improved rather than the conventional system.

2. Development on the application technology of driven wells and water infiltration inlets, and development on the combined system of tank heat exchangers and water infiltration inlets

Demonstration tests of a tank-type heat exchanger and an integrated-type heat exchanger with an infiltration inlet have been performed to assess the efficiency of the developing system for small-scale uses. The results show 28% of electricity saving. The initial costs of the total systems with tank-type and integrated-type are estimated to be 34% off and 44 % off rather than the conventional borehole system, respectively. To develop the evaluation technique of the infiltration inlet, in-situ infiltration tests have been performed at 4 sites. Estimated infiltration rate at each site is from 16 to 171 L/min, and this value is still lower than the actual rate of the installed infiltration inlets.

3. Development on potential assessment technique for open-loop systems of geothermal heat pumps

Demonstration test of the heating have been performed at Gifu site where is in the area with favorable underground temperature conditions. The COP and SCOP are 4.5 and 4.1, respectively. To explore the area with favorable underground conditions, the field measurements of underground temperature have been performed in Gifu city. The result suggests that the rapid groundwater flows occur along the old river channels. These are assumed to be possible areas with favorable underground conditions. To estimate the thermal property of the formation, the inversion method of the thermal response test (iTRT) has been performed at 3 sites. The results show that the flow rate of groundwater is very high at a certain depth. These are the first demonstrations of iTRT in the field and these revealed that iTRT is a powerful tool to estimate the thermal property of the formation.
