This research and development project aims to reduce the installation and operating costs of overall geothermal heat pump systems by 20% and 5%, respectively, by achieving a high-efficiency heat exchange system in which the thermal energy contained in groundwater is fed into a closed-loop horizontal geothermal energy extraction system buried near the ground surface.
In FY2014, research and development was carried out to establish this system, and then a demonstration plant with a capacity of 20kW was constructed and put on a trial run.
After the completion of the demonstration plant in FY2015, a heating and cooling demonstration run was conducted to identify problems and develop solutions in order to improve the system. More specifically, countermeasures were developed to prevent and control the freezing of the entire system including the primary circulating freshwater, and basic data on freezing prevention was collected while all heat collecting tanks were operated.
Going forward, this demonstration data will be used to (i) further improve the system so that each heat collecting tank can extract the target amount of thermal energy, (ii) verify the optimal groundwater sprinkling amount and pumping hours, and (iii) verify that the groundwater replenishment and heat-collecting capacity is kept sustainable.
