(FY2014-FY2015) FY2016 Annual Report

(1) Precedent research: FY2016 research was a continuation of previous one, and the team visited Iceland to understand the layouts of cooling towers, pipe lines, and such other items as well as the importance of landscape architects’ participation from the beginning of the geothermal power plant development.
(2) Development of patterns: The results of research were further studied through ecological landscape point of view in order to create design technique patterns. The previous version of “Collection of patterned techniques (preliminary version)” was revised not only by adding newly observed techniques in Iceland but also by incorporating the opinions from the committee members and by taking into account of the document published by Ministry of Environment. It is planned to be completed in the first half of FY2017. The collection is intended to be treated as a book of hints for geothermal developers during planning phase.
(3) The brush up of natural environment and landscape analyses: Their processes were reviewed internally and externally, and the opinions from geothermal developers and committee members were incorporated to improve the procedures. The total of nineteen sites was designed as case study and the comparison of typical civil engineering method and ecological landscape design method helped to clarify the differences and benefits of latter method.
(4) Development of application in trial edition for supporting ecological landscape: The design aid tool of VR is under the development continuing from last year. 3D models of trees and other main geothermal facilities were created, as well as other functions such as visibility study.
(5) Development of evaluation method: Evaluation method was considered in order to understand the average tolerance level of the impact towards natural environment and landscape. It was assumed that development location influences the impact so that the research was done using two types of evaluations. The first one was an evaluation of viewpoints surrounding geothermal plant through AHP method. The second one was the evaluation of three different categories which assumed to have the impact towards the environment and landscape. Both were done by questioning 159 subjects.
