In order to spread the hydrogen energy, it is very important to decrease the construction cost of the hydrogen serving station. One of the strategies develops the low cost hydrogen storage tank. JFE Steel Corporation, JFE Container Corporation and MITSUBISHI RAYON Co., LTD. started the development of a low cost type2 hydrogen storage tank with a high strength low alloy steel liner and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) layer.
Those studies as follows were conducted.
1. Development of the steel liner and the steel plug and evaluation of mechanical property of the steel by JFE Steel Corporation.
The fatigue test of a high strength steel under 0.1Hz with cathodic hydrogen charging was conducted. The steel didn’t fracture up to 1 million cycle at applied stress of fatigue limit under 1Hz in air. And hydrogen permeation behavior of a high strength steel in high pressure hydrogen gas environment was studied with the special hydrogen permeation test equipment developed by JFE steel.
2. Development of type2 composite reinforced pressure vessel by JFE Container Corporation.
Actual size (200 liter) Type 2 tank that will be sold in the market was trialed. The manufacturing process are as follows; heavy thickness seamless tube rolling, heat treatment (Quench and Temper), machining of outside and inside surface, forging of plug, machining of thread and filament winding. The proto-type tank (150 liter) with the same dimension of outer diameter and thickness of steel liner and thickness of CFRP layer has been prepared and showcased at the FC-Expo in 2017.
3. The supply of an appropriate carbon fiber for type2 composite reinforced pressure vessel by MITSUBISHI RAYON Co., LTD.
 The supply of appropriate carbon fiber for Type2 carbon-fiber reinforced pressure Vessel was selected and supplied by Mitsubishi Rayon Co.,LTD. A Type2 vessel with middle size was tried to manufactured by “Filament Winding method” and some technical problems on production were discussed.
4. DATA acquisition and prediction of fatigue life of UD-CFRP by Mitsubishi Rayon Co.,LTD. And Tokyo Metropolitan University(TMU).
In order to obtain data for certification of cylinders, We have decided the geometry of specimen especially considering the shear strength of the adhesives between CFRP and tabs, referring from ASTM,JIS preceding fiscal year. This fiscal year, we obtained typical S-N diagram for our standard PAN-Based UD-Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics. S-N fatigue data were measured by not only TMU but also the other testing laboratory(TL). Depending on this result, we think reliability of test specimen and method has been shown.
