NEDO Identifies Four Areas for Technology Development to Promote Commercialization of High-Temperature Superconductivity

New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
NEDO has identified four technology development areas to promote commercialization of high temperature superconductivity (HTS), and will soon start supporting technology development activities in these areas.
In the field of electric power, development will focus on ensuring essential safety functions for the practical use of superconductivity cable systems as well as establishing recovery methods in the event an accident or malfunction occurs. In the field of transportation, demonstrations of superconductivity direct current (DC) power transmission technology will be conducted and standards for design and construction methods as well as system operation, and maintenance will be established. Finally, the field of industrial technology will cover the technology development of HTS high stable magnetic field magnet system for applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as the technology development of HTS wire rods to improve the magnetic field characteristics and to reduce the cost with the aim of promoting rapid commercialization.
