NEDO Launches an Energy Saving Seawater Desalination Technology Demonstration Project in the Republic of South Africa
-Aiming to Resolve Water Shortages through NEDO's First Demonstration Project in Africa-

November 18, 2016
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)

NEDO has agreed to launch a demonstration project for energy saving seawater desalination technology in collaboration with eThekwini Municipality in the Republic of South Africa and has concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the project. This will be NEDO's first demonstration project in Africa.

NEDO will construct a demonstration facility that can produce 6,250 tons of drinking water daily from seawater and recycled water through an integrated seawater desalination and water reuse system developed through NEDO's domestic projects. The system is expected to achieve a reduction in energy use of more than 30% and will reduce the impact on the surrounding marine environment compared to conventional technologies. In the future, entrusted company will expand the facility to integrate it in the drinking water supply service in eThekwini Municipality, with an aim towards spreading the technology throughout South Africa, which is facing a serious water shortage, and further to the wider African region.
