NEDO Develops a DWDM Transmission Switching System Incorporating High-Speed PLZT Optical Switches

As part of a NEDO project, OA Laboratory Co., Ltd. and EpiPhotonics Corp. have developed a dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission switching system capable of reducing the power consumption of network systems for broadcasting stations by about 1/4 while achieving distortion-free switching of 8K video data.

By incorporating high-speed PLZT optical switches with high-speed switching performance and power-saving properties, this DWDM system is the first in the world to realize uninterrupted switching of uncompressed 8K video streaming data by transmitting the signal as light without electrical conversion. Utilizing these results, NEDO aims to achieve further reductions in data center power consumption in the future.
