NEDO to Launch Demonstration Project for a Seawater Desalination System that will process heated discharge water in Qatar
– Will aim for the establishment of an energy-efficient, low environmental impact seawater desalination system –
October 20, 2017
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
NEDO and Qatar General Electricity & Water Co. have agreed to jointly conduct a demonstration project for a seawater desalination system that will process heated discharge water. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding this project was signed on October 19 at the venue of the Japan-Qatar Joint Economy Committee.
This demonstration project will verify the applicability of an energy-efficient, low environmental impact seawater desalination system. It will utilize high-temperature, facility-cooling seawater discharged from Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar as feed water and desalinate the seawater using a unique, low-cost reverse osmosis membrane method (RO membrane method).
Going forward, NEDO will construct and operate the demonstration plant to acquire data necessary for commercialization and to evaluate a business model including dissemination to surrounding countries.
