NEDO and the members of the Innovative Structural Materials Association (ISMA) – the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST); Fuji Light Metal Co., Ltd; and Tobata Seisakusho Co., Ltd., a subcontractor – have succeeded in the development of a flame-retardant magnesium alloy extrusion with significantly improved mechanical properties compared to conventionally produced versions.

Going forward, NEDO expects increased demands of this magnesium alloy in products where high flame-retardance is required, such as railway vehicle components. It is also expected to achieve a significant weight reduction for railway vehicles.
