NEDO Holds Opening Ceremony in Kitakyushu City to Commemorate Start of Demonstration Operations for Floating Offshore Wind Power Generation System

May 24, 2019

On May 21, 2019, NEDO held an opening ceremony in Kitakyushu City to commemorate the start of demonstration operations for a barge-type floating offshore wind power generation system. The system, the first of its kind in Japan, was installed at a sea depth of about 50 meters and is located 15 kilometers off the coast of Kitakyushu.

During demonstration operations, validity of the system’s design will be evaluated by comparing design values with various measurement values obtained from the demonstration system such as those pertaining to electricity production power generation, wave pressure, and mooring force. Technologies will also be developed for efficient maintenance of the floater and mooring system using a remotely-controlled unmanned submersible vehicle and for the failure prediction diagnosis system for the wind turbine. By clarifying the system’s safety, reliability, and economic efficiency, this demonstration aims to realize technologies for low-cost floating offshore wind power generation systems.

Distinguished attendees at the opening ceremony included: Fukuoka Prefecture Vice Governor Seitaro Hattori (attending on behalf of Governor Hiroshi Ogawa); City of Kitakyushu Deputy Mayor Hiroshi Imanaga; Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Department, Policy Planning Division Director Masayoshi Yamakage; Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry Director-General Koichi Shiota; NEDO President Hiroshi Oikawa; NEDO Executive Director Yoshiteru Sato; and representatives of many other interested parties.
