40th6 NEDO 40年史 I would like to oer my sincere congratulations to the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization （NEDO） on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.Both the International Energy Agency （IEA） and NEDO were founded with the goal of enhancing energy security in the wake of the oil crises of the 1970s. Today, our two organizations are playing leading roles in advancing a much broader range of energy security issues, including topics related to electricity markets, clean energy transitions, climate change, air pollution and energy access.The year 2020 has witnessed the unprecedented global crisis of Covid-19, which has taken a heavy toll on the energy sector. We expect that global energy demand will fall sharply in 2020 due to the restrictions on mobility and sluggish economic activity. We also expect global CO2 emissions to decrease by a record amount, to levels not seen since 2010. These trends, which would normally be welcome, are unfortunately the consequence of lower mobility and economic activity, and could be quickly reversed unless appropriate policy action is taken. For this reason, the IEA released a “Sustainable Recovery” report in June 2020, which calls on governments to put sustainability at the heart of their economic stimulus and recovery packages. The report, which was prepared in conjunction with the IMF, demonstrates that sustainable recovery plans can boost economic growth, create millions of jobs, structurally reduce CO2 emissions, and pave the way towards meeting long-term climate goals as laid out in the Paris Agreement. Another IEA report on "Clean Energy Innovation" released in July 2020 highlights the importance of innovation, as existing technologies are insucient to bring the world to net zero emissions. This is all the more true for decarbonising “hard-to-abate” sectors, such as long-haul trucking, shipping, aviation and steel and cement.NEDO, which led the world in the development of solar power 40 years ago, has promoted innovative technology development in many areas including renewable energy, hydrogen, batteries, and energy eciency.
