英文要約Title: Developments of mass-production methods of stainless steel foils used for bipolar plates of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (FY2005-FY2009) FY2008 annual report: Sumitomo Metal Industries, LTD.: Stainless steels have excellent corrosion resistance due to the passive film formed on the surface. The passive film on the surface, however, originally exhibits high electrical resistance. Stainless steels are, therefore, not suitable for such electrically conductive elements as bipolar plates of PEM fuel cells. We have already developed stainless steels exhibiting low contact electrical resistance with NEDO. Our final report with NEDO in FY2003-FY2004 represents that exposed conductive metallic inclusions on the surface of our newly developed stainless steels provide a function of electrical surface connections with membrane electrode assemblies so as to keep resistance low and improve conductivity high in PEM fuel cells. Our main targets of this new project with NEDO are to make our newly developed austenitic stainless steel foil more developed. The details are as follows; (a)Developments of mass production processes of the newly developed low cost and good press formability austenitic stainless steel for bipolar plates of PEM fuel cells. (b)Developments of low cost mass production process of metal bipolar plates by means of progressive die forming processes. (c)Completion of long duration test over 10,000 hours of the polymer electrolyte fuel cells with the newly developed stamped austenitic stainless foil bipolar plates. The followings are summary of results obtained in FY2008.
(1)A newly-developed austenitic stainless steel hot coil with 5.8 millimeters thick, 900 millimeters wide, 8.45 tons by weight was produced by means of conventional hot rolling process. (2)Fifteen thousands of bipolar plates with 100 cm2 flow passage area were stamped at rates of 60 pieces per minute by means of progressive die forming progress. Die assemblies of cemented carbide exhibited exceptional durability without maintenance grinding; nonetheless a few of punching dies were fractured due to its own galls by way of burrs in the range of twelve thousands shots. Optimization studies of cemented carbide of dies have been carried out with the start of this fiscal year. (3)Performances of the developed austenitic stainless steel were confirmed in over thousands of hour fuel cell testing under the condition of the fixed output current density at 0.5A/cm2. The newly developed austenitic stainless steel bipolar plates exhibit favorable performance in the long-term testing. Typical soluble metal ions which solved out from the passive metal surface of stainless steels have dominantly no significant adverse effects on the performance of fuel cells. (4) Durability tests of PEM fuel stacks consisting of numbers of cells have already started to establish our cutting-edge technologies in several conditions.
