To popularize biofuel derived from herbaceous biomass feedstocks, like rice straw, that do not compete with food supplies, it is necessary to develop core and peripheral elemental energy conversion technologies. To use high moisture content and bulky herbaceous biomass as a feedstock, low cost and energy efficient drying, transportation and storage technology must be developed. We develop the drying technology with special water proof sheet and the pelletizing technology for herbaceous biomass.  : R&D of Methods to Efficiently Store and Dry Herbaceous Biomass: 4 locations in all Japan (Hokkaido, Niigata, Omuta Fukuoka and Kitakyushu Fukuoka prefecture) were selected to comprehend the regional characters of raw materials. Drying tests of rice straw rolls covered by 3 kinds of the selected water proof sheets which can penetrate vapor, but not penetrate water(abbreviated to the WP sheet) were commenced in 4 above-mentioned regions from Oct.’2009. The rice straw rolls harvested at Fukuoka prefecture (Omuta and Kitakyushu) were covered by the WP sheets for 3〜4 months and the pelletizing test was carried out. The moisture of the rice straw rolls were decreased to 20% from 70% of just harvesting by drying under the WP sheets in the sun. This dried rice straw was confirmed to be sufficiently possible for pelletizing in spite of a pretest. In addition, 6 kinds of the WP sheets supplied for the test of storing/drying rice straw rolls were studied by comparison about the physical property (Measurement of pulling intensity, vapor penetration degree and proof against water pressure etc.)before and after storage test(4〜5 months storage). According to this evaluation, a sheet was selected and confirmed no deterioration of those qualities after stored for 5 months. :Development of On-site Pelletization Technologies for Herbaceous Biomass: The pelletizing system was examined based on the survey of the harvest site of the rice straw. As results, we selected the machine that crushed the rice straw rolls, and carried the crushing rice straws to the pelletizing machine. And, we have accumulated design data from the examination with a existing pelletizing machine, such as indispensability power, pelletizing condition(Pushing pressure of roller), and die shape necessary to make the rice straw the pellets by the production capacity 1t/h or more. And we completed the schematic plan of the machine that made rice straw of the length of 5cm-10cm the pellets directly. Continuously, the proof examination of the entire system that consists of the rice straw rolls crusher, the straw carrying equipment, and the pelletizing machine is carried out. In addition, to evaluate the adaptability to the biofuel production, the crushing examination of the rice straw pellet and the enzyme saccharification examination that used the crushing sample were executed, and the test results are now under analyzing.
