英文要約1) Outline and purpose of the project
In the fiscal year of 2008, we have developed the item I “Establishment of organosulfur polymer synthesis” and the item III “Electrochemical analysis of newly developed organosulfur cathode materials” under the joint project between Polythion Co Ltd. and Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, “Development of new cathode electrode materials with higher capacity for lithium-ion batteries”.
The purpose of the item I is improvement of purity for organosulfur polymers by modification of the synthesis. The key steps of the synthesis are as follows: (i) removal process of impurity for intermediate, (ii) polymerization of intermediate with linker.
The purposes of the item III are 1) fabrication and characterization of Li-ion battery using newly developed organosulfur polymers, and 2) evaluation of the batteries and clarification of the relation between properties of the organosulfur polymers and the battery performance.
2) Results 1: Establishment of organosulfur polymer synthesis
We have established the new route for the organosulfur polymer synthesis with high purity. Those process are consist of the two kye steps, intermediate synthesis and polymer synthesis. Intermediates were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared absorption spectrometry (IR), elemental analysis and mass spectroscopy. In the polymer synthesis, we confirmed producutuion of insolble compounds and that this material exhibited good discharge capacity. We can concluded that we have succeeded in synthesizing the newly developed organosulfur polymer with high purity.
3) Results 2: Electrochemical analysis of newly developed organosulfur cathode materials
We have investigated four compounds as a cathode active matral. Four compounds were a model organosulfur monomer with impurity, a model organosulfur monomer with high purity, an organosulfur polymer with impurity, and the newly developed organosulfur polymer with high purity. Cathods were prepeared with those materials/acetylene black/PTFE binder. The cathodes were tested at 0.1 C in a cell with a Li anode, a 1M LiClO4 solution in propylene carbonate. The newly developed organosulfur polymer with high purity exhibited the good capacity and electrochemical stability during the cycling.
These results indicate that there is a good effect of removal of the impurity from the organosulfur polymer for the battery performance.
