This study is examining optimal models for IGFC extreme high-efficiency coal-fired power technology, the oxygen-blown coal gasification technology that constitutes an important component technology along the developmental path toward groundbreaking zero emissions, and high-efficiency CO2 capture technology. Plans for large-scale demonstration tests are being formulated on the basis of the results obtained from the study.
We investigated the technological special features of coal gasification technology and the state of its development and spread in Japan and overseas. We conducted several deliberations to clarify the special features of EAGLE gasifier and assessed the advantages of applying the gasifier in CO2 capture type coal-fired power systems.
With the aim of bringing EAGLE gasifier into practical use at an early date, we set up a study group composed of academic experts and knowledgeable people in the industry, to examine the wider-perspective possibilities of deploying the gasifier in other industries. The group investigated the elemental technologies and marketability with the manufacturing processes in each industry, and studied the possibilities and issues for using EAGLE gasifier in various industrial manufacturing processes. They compiled methods and issues for utilization of EAGLE gasifier in industry and put together a multipurpose utilization strategy.
We formulated scenarios for the spread of oxygen-blown coal gasification plants in Japan and overseas, and identified issues for their commercialization.
On the basis of the demonstration test site conditions, we deliberated basic plans for the system flows, plant performance, layout, main processes and so forth, of a demonstration test facility applying an EAGLE gasifier. Further, we also carried out conceptual design of the CO2 capture demonstration test plant, and also deliberated the possibility of the demonstration test.
We are currently engaged in identifying the facility’s aspects to be rationalized, as regards the processes that will make up the demonstration plant, namely coal gasification, gas clean-up, air separation and combined cycle system. Later we will further scrutinize and assess these items and proceed with the rationalization planning. Building on such rationalization planning deliberations, our schedule for next fiscal year is to carry out basic design. With those as basis, we aim to create optimal systems for the demonstration plant.
