英文要約R&D for Quality and Measurement Standards of Bio-fuels (FY2008-FY2011) FY2010 Annual Report
 The final aim of this project is to contribute to the domestic and international
standardization of bio-fuels by establishing methods to evaluate the quality of
bio-ethanol and biodiesel (BDF), by establishing methods to measure bio-ethanol, and
through the monitoring of international standardization trends.
 An evaluation method for pH of bio-ethanol was proposed for JIS. In method, general
pH meters are available and the high reliability of measured value was enabled with
mixing with water. In the meeting for the discussion of bio-ethanol quality standard
organized by Petroleum Association of Japan (PAJ), the round robin test of this
evaluation method was done by meeting members, the availability was certified and it
is going to be introduced new JIS for bio-ethanol quality.
 Experimental research of the metrological standard for ethanol flow meters was
conducted. Positive displacement meters, a turbine meter and a Coriolis meter were
calibrated at several kinds of a working liquid (Water, Kerosene and Ethanol) using the
Small-Volume-Prover in an ethanol facility and national flow standard facilities for
water and kerosene in order to investigate the characteristic of the flow meters for
ethanol which was calibrated in alternative working liquid.
As R&D for Quality and Measurement Standards of Bio-fuel, copper corrosion tests
and accelerated oxidation tests were applied to the jatropha BDF blends (B5). The test
results, i.e., surface appearance of copper plate contacted to the BDF blends under the
specified test condition (50℃, 3h) and the increase in the acid value of B5 after the
accelerated oxidation at 115℃ for 16h under the oxygen gas bubbling, have shown that
the present jatropha BDF meet the quality standards for B5.
The presence of tumor-promoter phorbol esters (PEs) from Jatropha were carefully
checked by HPLC/UV analysis. Our present experiments suggest that PEs are not
present in the diesel exhaust of the methyl ester Jatropha.
For the catalytic oxidation of BDF mist oxidation, T50 of Al2O3 support having
macropores (>1micron) was shifted 20 oC lower than the one without macropore. It was
expected that the macropore had the effect of preventing the pore blockage of the
surface of support by the fuel mist.
The first meeting of National Committee of ISO/TC28/SC7 was held on 24 Aug. 2010,
and a few our staffs attended the meeting. Two working groups (WG) such as ethanol
test methods WG and Biodiesel fuel test methods WG were established in the
committee.
