世界の喫緊の課題である水問題解決を背景に、研究課題名である「Mega-ton Water System」は、近未来に実現されなければならない環境とエネルギーに配慮した大規模淡水化システム技術の実用化を目標とし、要素技術5件、システム技術3件の計8件のサブテーマ研究を推進している。

a.国際会議参加:IUPAC World Polymer Congress(米国)、Engineering Conferences International Advanced Membrane Technology(シンガポール)、International Water Summit 2013(UAE)、Beijing International Seawater Desalination High-Level Forum(中国)の他、米国、サウジアラビア、スペイン等、計10回の国際会議に参加し、世界レベルでの最新研究動向について戦略的に情報交換を行った。
c.文献調査・解析:国際会議での発表資料の他に、GWI DesalData を活用し、海水淡水化プラントの設備及び運転コストの推移、プレイヤーの変遷等、ビジネス動向の把握、分析に努めた。

英文要約Contents of the research and development
The “Mega-ton Water System” is the name of a research topic related to solving the global water issues. It aims to put into practical use an environmentally and energy friendly large-scale desalination system technology - something that must be realized in the near future. Based on this aim, it is promoting eight sub-topics consisting of five elemental technologies and three system technologies.
This year marks the third year of this research and in order to confirm the progress of each sub-topic as well as confirm and review the validity of the research’s overall aim, we took part in international conferences and actively entered into exchange with international advisers as ways to obtain the latest information on international competitiveness (costs, energy and reliability).
a) International conference participation: In order to strategically exchange information on the latest global research trends, we took part in a total of ten international conferences in a number of countries such as the U.S., Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Spain and China.
b) Confirming the progress of sub-topic research: Information was shared on the progress of the research as a whole by holding sub-topic leader conferences (twice), SSD rounds (three times) as well as taking part in individual sub-topic briefing sessions (twice) and holding collaborative workshops (5 times) between the sub-topics.
c) Literature research and analysis: GWI DesalData was used to identify and analyze changing desalination plant facility and running costs, changing players, and business trends.
d) Exchanging information with international advisers: The status of research progress was reported to four international advisers for their valuable feedback.
e) Information delivery: In addition to promoting this research, we actively cooperated with Outreach activities and press coverage in newspapers and journals. This year we also participated as a witness in the Diet’s House of Representatives investigating committee on international and global environmental and food problems, and gave opinions on worldwide water problems and the foreign strategy of Japan.

Outputs of the research and development
Now in its third year, this research has gained the support of NEDO and the eight sub-topics, which are contributed to by a total of 27 institutions made up of universities and companies under the supervision of Senior Scientific Director, have progressed virtually to plan.
In relation to the aim of this research to “halve the costs of existing fresh water generation on a mega-ton scale”, there are currently signs that up to two-thirds of existing costs can be reduced. However, based on the points brought up by this year’s mid-term evaluation, in this final year of the research we will be aiming to review and place emphasis on research planning that prioritizes the realization of a “mega-ton system” and to establish the core “mega-ton system” technology.
