- Reactivity of blast furnace slag aggregate
Effect and mechanism of blast furnace slag aggregate for freezing-and-thawing resistance of concrete coexisting with NaCl were investigated. To achieve excellent freezing-and-thawing durability, reinforcement of interface transition zone, which is achieved by reaction between the slag aggregate and matrix phase, is important. This property is strongly related to hydration reaction products and balance of cation ions in internal water, and type of cements also effect on the property. In case of insufficient aggregate reactivity or unsuitable cement character, concrete property would be possible to improve by using ground granulated blast furnace slag, adding thickener, fining the aggregate, extending aging period, and so on. It is also important to select appropriate coarse aggregates for freezing-and-thawing durability. In our research, under NaCl coexisting condition, coarse aggregate which meet the JIS criteria may be insufficient.
- Proposal of quality control test method of blast furnace slag aggregate for freezing-and-thawing durable concrete.
We propose the new test method to clarify blast furnace slag aggregate property briefly for the resistance to freezing and thawing within NaCl (aq). This test are carried out using small cubic samples of mortar immersed in NaCl (aq.) under temperature cycle between 20 to -18 degree centigrade. The sample size is small and test period is about one quarter of normal freezing and thawing test of concrete, but certain relationship between this test and the concrete test results are observed. Repeatability is also confirmed basically. Test conditions will be set in detail by guidance of cement-concrete experts.
