1. Objectives
The objective is to demonstrate the viability of an integrated CCS system, from CO2 capture to storage. Approximately 100,000 tonnes per year of CO2 is injected and stored in two offshore saline aquifers named Moebetsu Formation and Takinoue Formation. Monitoring of the stored CO2 and surveys of the marine environment are also conducted.
2. Summary of results of FY2018
2-1 The amount of CO2 captured was approximately 80,000 tonnes.
2-2 The amount of CO2 injected into the Moebetsu Formation and the Takinoue Formation were approximtely 77,000 tonnes and 61 tonnes respectively. The cumulative CO2 injected into the Moebetsu Formation and the Takinoue Formation were approximately 234,000 tonnes and 98 tonnes respectively (as of March 24, 2019).
2-3 As the 3rd seismic survey, a 2D seismic survey was carried out, and a comparative analysis with the FY2013 baseline survey was implemented. A 3D seismic survey targeting the small area north of the injection area was carried out to acquire baseline data in case the CO2 distribution extends further north than originally expected.
2-4 For the Moebetsu Formation, estimates were made on reservoir property changes and injection well integrity based on pressure analyses. The geological model of FY2017 was further expanded to the east. For the Takinoue Formation, a revision of the reservoir model and prediction of the distribution of injected CO2 and pressure in the reservoir were carried out.
2-5 In accordance with the Monitoring Plan, quarterly surveys of the marine environment for chemical property of sea water and marine organisms were carried out. During FY2018, the results did not exceed the threshold to proceed from Normal Monitoring to Precautionary Monitoring.
2-6 Information on overseas CCS regulations, technical standards and guidelines about “monitoring after well abandonment” and “project risk” were obtained and analyzed for providing reference material to study the ideal state of domestic regulation.
2-7 For the implementation of CCS, obtaining wide public understanding is essential. Panel exhibitions, site visits, lectures and presentations and experiment classes for kids were conducted widely. In addition, submission of papers in journals and communication via website as well as mass media were undertaken.
2-8 Communication of information was conducted through participation in conferences such as GHGT-14 and COP24, communication with embassies in Japan and collaboration with GCCSI and CSLF. The total number of foreign visitors to the Tomakomai CCS Center exceeded 300.
2-9 At the Issues Examination Meeting, guidance and recommendations were received on issues such as the Moebetsu Formation injection results and the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake.
2-10 As a future plan of the CCS project, studies on the issue of facilities to deal with diversification of CO2 supply sources, and research on the disassembling of ground facilities after project closure were carried out.
