This project was launched on 21/Mar/2018 spinning out from a project entitled “Highly-Coupled Analysis of Phenomena in MEA and its Constituents and Evaluation of Cell Performance”, which was managed by FC-Cubic form FY2015 to FY2017. The objective of the current project is to provide valuable knowledge for significant improvement of Pt-free catalyst by investigating the mechanism and active sites of the oxygen reduction over carbon-based cathode catalysts. The work-package (WP) involved in this project and the achievement (AC) in FY2018 are listed as follows.
WP1: Establishing methodology for the kinetic study of the catalysts with multiple active sites.
AC1: The kinetic model which was demonstrated in FY2017 for Fe/N/C and N/C catalysts in acidic media has been applied to the catalysts in basic media
WP2: Performance test and simulation of the MEAs with Pt-free carbon-based catalyst
AC2: A model study was carried out to simulate I-V polarizations curve with a Fe/N/C catalyst.
WP3: Study of the degradation mechanism of carbon-based Pt-free catalyst
AC3: Synchrotron spectroscopy at SPring-8 BL36XU was carried out in May and November in 2018. The degradation as to the Fe species has been analyzed by in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
WP4: Technology development meeting regarding Pt-free catalysts
AC4: Three times of meetings with Yokohama National University were held in FY2018.
