FY2018

Introduction
One major problem for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) in commercial applications is the cost and scarcity of platinum, which has been thought to be essential for the cathode catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The objective of this project is establishing a build-up approach for the development of innovative Pt-free cathode catalysts.
The research and development were conducted by Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech.), Shizuoka University (Shizuoka Univ.), Kumamoto University (Kumamoto Univ.) and Asahi Kasei Corporation (Asahi Kasei).

Targets
WP-A1 Obtain tens of mg of novel catalyst materials.
WP-A2 Obtain perspective for improving the catalytic activity and stability of Pt-free catalyst.

WP-B1 At least one compound for novel catalyst materials should have been synthesized.
WP-B2 Complete structural characterization of novel catalyst materials.

WP-C1 Complete the set-up of an AEMFC testing station.
WP-C2 NA. This WP will be conducted in FY2019.

WP-D1 At least three compounds should have been prototyped.
WP-D2 NA. This WP will be conducted in FY2019.

Results and Progress
WP-A1 A few mg of crude product has been obtained. Synthesis and purification procedures need to be polished.
WP-A2 Tow novel materials and one benchmark have been measured in acidic and basic condition. Highly active and highly stable active centered need to be discovered.

WP-B1 Several compounds have been designed and one of them has started to be synthesized.
WP-B2 Enough quality of analysis sample should be obtained.

WP-C1 An AEMFC testing station has been installed in Kumamoto Univ. PtC and FeNC cathode catalysts have been tested in AEMFCs and showed promising catalytic activities.
WP-C2 NA. This WP will be conducted in FY2019.

WP-D1 Three compounds have been supplied to Tokyo Tech.
WP-D2 NA. This WP will be conducted in FY2019.
