英文要約The project aims for developing the practical application of the geological carbon dioxide storage technology in industrial scale until 2020, and for innovative development towards further utilization in global CCS projects. To achieve this, we work on each research topic under three main subjects:
(1) Development on Safety Management Technologies for Large-scale CO2 Injection and Storage

3. Geological Modeling for Large-scale Reservoir, Evaluation of Reservoirs

5. The Development of Fiber-optics-based Monitoring Systems for the Stability of Geological Formation and the Integrity of Abandoned Wells
6. The Development of a CO2 Leakage Detection System and an Integrated System for Environmental Impact Assessment
7. Research Collaboration between the US and Japan on CCS Risk Management and Optical Fiber Sensing
(2) Technologies for the Efficient Pressure Management and Utilization of Large-scale Reservoirs
1. The Development of Techniques to Optimizing a Layout of CO2 Injection Wells and Pressure Management Wells
2. Improvement of Storage Efficiency by Applying Enhanced CO2 Dissolution Technique
(3) Environment Setting for CCS Deployment and Standard Development
1. The Development of CO2 Storage Safety Management Protocol (IRP)
2. Production of Best Practice Manuals by Incorporating Data from the Tomakomai Demonstration and Co-operation with Overseas Organizations
3. The Improvement of Social Acceptance and Compatibility with International Standardization
In this fiscal year, we developed key technologies on each research topic. In particular, the “Development of Safety Management System for Injection” implemented the function to capture seismic events accurately. In the “Development of Fiber-optics-based Monitoring Systems for the Stability of Geological Formation and the Integrity of Abandoned Wells”, we installed the optic fiber cables in the wells with several hundred meters long, and monitored the strain change caused by the fluid migration in the formation. “Improvement of Storage Efficiency by Applying Enhanced CO2 Dissolution Technique” demonstrated improvement of the storage capacity in the lab-scale experiments, and prepared the field injection test next year.
To promote this project appropriately, we set-up the “Research Promotion Committee” by third-party experts, and carried out the project with checking the progress and obtaining technical advices.
The Geological Carbon Dioxide Storage Technology Research Association (GCS) promote the practical application research of CCS by gathering a wide range of knowledge and expertise collaborating with universities and research institutes domestically and globally.
