The aim of this project is to demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of power-to-gas basic technology with a specific focus on the production of hydrogen from renewable energy, its transportation, storage, and end use. In support of this we will develop a hydrogen utilization business model that optimizes the exploitation of hydrogen as both a commercial commodity and an energy source for balancing the supply and demand of the electricity grid.
The overall goal is to use the findings of this project to increase the penetration of renewable energy through the large-scale deployment of sustainable hydrogen-based business systems.
The project consists of two phases: The Feasibility Study and the Technology Demonstration. The Feasibility Study has been completed in FY 2017.
The research activities of the Technology Demonstration in FY 2018 are shown below and have progressed according to plan.
The Technology Demonstration:
1.Development and Design for the Demonstration Plant and System
2.Construction of the Demonstration Plant/Implementation and manufacturing of the Demonstration System
3.Construction of the photovoltaic power generation facilities
4.Considering of evaluation method and target value in demonstration operation
The result is as follows:
The Technology Demonstration:
1. Development and Design for the Demonstration Plant and System
In the hydrogen production equipment and hydrogen storage and supply equipment, the technical design of the Demonstration Plant was completed based on the basic design in FY 2017.
The specifications of the hydrogen energy management system, the power control system, and the hydrogen demand forecasting system were confirmed and the functional design was completed.

2. Construction of the Demonstration Plant/Implementation and manufacturing of the Demonstration System
Construction of the hydrogen production equipment building of the Demonstration Plant was completed
The hydrogen energy management system was implemented and the unit test of each function was completed.
3. Construction of the photovoltaic power generation facilities
The design and construction of photovoltaic power generation equipment with power generation capacity of 10 MW were completed.
4.Considering of evaluation method and target value in demonstration operation
Evaluation method and target value of the hydrogen demand forecasting system, effective utilization rate of Renewable energy, operation corresponding to Demand Response, etc., in demonstration operation were considered.
