1. Promotion of ISO / TC 197 international standardization of hydrogen station equipment
HySUT, as the secretariat to the Japanese mirror committee to ISO/TC197 has been leading the international standardization of technologies relating to hydrogen in collaboration with JARI, through survey of worldwide trends and movements of hydrogen technologies including the development of machineries and equipment for hydrogen refueling stations, and supporting and enhancing the activities of its national committees through sending experts to international meetings and alliancing with associations relating to hydrogen technologies.
The standardization committee for hydrogen energy technologies, the Japanese master committee overseeing its 15 national committees, held two meetings in November 2018 and February 2019 respectively and set the policies to guide the national committees’ in developing international standards.
In the fiscal 2018 the 15 national committees engaged in developing 15 ISO standards and the following four ISO standards were published by ISO.
a. Gaseous hydrogen - Fuelling stations - Part3 Valves (ISO 1980-3)
b. Transportable gas storage devices - Hydrogen absorbed in reversible metal hydrate (ISO 16111)
c. Gaseous Hydrogen - Land vehicle fuel containers (ISO 19881)
d. Gaseous Hydrogen - Thermally activated pressure relief devices for compressed hydrogen vehicle fuel containers (ISO 19882)
At the end of the fiscal 2018 eight standards are in their final draft of international standard stages and there are three standards in development.

2. Promotion of international collaboration on standardization activities
Japanese experts were dispatched to Task 37 (Hydrogen Safety) and Task 38 (Power-to-Hydrogen and Hydrogen-to-X) under the IEA Hydrogen Implementation Agreement, and discussions were advanced.

3. Development for ISO Hydrogen Quality International Standard
(1) The contamination by halides in hydrogen refueling stations and its impact on fuel cell performance has been investigated for the next revision of ISO 14687. Organic halides which are supposed to use as cleaning agent of stainless-steel tubes are detected in the United States and Europe, but are not used in Japan. Some organic halides in hydrogen fuel were reported to degrade fuel cell performance. In order to contribute to revising an appropriate hydrogen fuel quality standard, we will continue necessary research in cooperation with foreign research institutes.
(2) Development of operation cost reduction by optimization of hydrogen quality management
We examined the simplified analysis survey with sulfur detector tube and the revision of the draft of Japan Hydrogen Quality Guideline.
