Development of Production Technologies for Biojet Fuels

Project overview

Project period: FY2017 to FY2024, FY2022 budget: JPY 5.18 billion

Momentum is growing worldwide for introducing biojet fuel as a game changing solution for reducing CO2 emissions in the aviation field starting in 2030. Based on the results realized during the development of underlying technologies, the following challenges have been identified: finding ways to inexpensively collect algae with mass-culture technology utilizing microalgae, developing technology that stabilizes the characteristics of gas for the gasification of wood chips, and the development of technology for achieving inexpensive and reliable production of jet fuel.

The goal of this project is to achieve commercialization of biojet fuel by around 2030 by overcoming the above challenges and developing the technology necessary to achieve the integrated production of biojet fuel from microalgae, wood chips, and other biomass raw materials. The project also aims to reduce the emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the aviation field starting in 2030 by promoting the utilization of biojet fuel.
