Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Phase 2:Intelligent Knowledge Cyber and Processing Infrastructure Integrating Physical Domains

Project overview

Project period: FY2018 to FY2022, FY2022 budget: JPY 1.61 billion
PD:SASO Hideyuki, (Specially Appointed Professor, Tokyo Institute of Technology)

This project is being implemented by NEDO as the legal entity in charge of managing Intelligent Knowledge Processing Infrastructure Integrating Physical and Virtual Domains, one of the twelve issues being pursued by the Cabinet Office during the second phase of the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program known as SIP.
To achieve Society 5.0—the aspirational future society envisioned under the 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan—it is necessary to realize advanced, high-efficiency collection and accumulation of information at Japan's various high-quality field locations (physical spaces) and establish linkage technologies (cyber physical systems or CPSs*) that realize a high degree of fusion with cyberspace (virtual spaces). It is also important to develop technology that leverages Japan's strengths—including systematization and technology with a focus on real-time processing, controllability, and ultra-low power consumption—and systematizes this technology as a new platform, but the high costs of physical space processing and Japan's shortage of IT human resources have become extremely serious problems.

Therefore, this research and development project is being pursued with the following goals:

  1. To develop a platform focused on edges (i.e. an edge platform) that makes it easy to link cyber and physical spaces and then implement this platform in society to greatly reduce physical-space processing costs and stimulate the industrial sector, including Japan's SMEs and startups.
  2. To simultaneously achieve the practical application and systematization of ultra-low-power-consumption IoT devices and innovative sensor technology by utilizing Japanese materials and device technology, one of its strengths.
  3. To develop social issue implementation technology necessary for the establishment of edge-focused CPSs, and show society examples of the successful resolution of such issues.
  4. To build a system that enables independent maintenance and updating of the edge platform, with the aim of maintaining and expanding the international competitiveness of Japan's CPSs.
    • CPS: Cyber-physical system (a system in which cyber and physical spaces are closely connected)

The main research and development sub-themes are as follows:

  • Research sub-theme I. Common platform technology for development of IoT solutions
  • Research sub-theme II. Ultra-low-power-consumption IoT devices and innovative sensor technology
  • Research sub-theme III. Social implementation technology for achieving Society 5.0
