Cross-Ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Phase 2: Cyber Physical Security for IoT Society

Project overview

Project period: FY2018 to FY2022, FY2022 budget: JPY 1.822 billon

The IoT equipment embedded in industrial systems, living environments, and other physical spaces links to the cloud and the rest of cyberspace through various networks and then connects with advanced knowledge and analytical processing to create various types of added value and bring enormous benefits to the economy, a physical space. On the other hand, the dissemination and expansion of IoT have resulted in the threat of cyberattacks looming over activities in various industries, and supply chain risk has also become a problem, including the embedding of unauthorized programs in the processes for manufacturing and distributing products and services as well as the alteration of such products and services. Therefore, the goal of this research and development is to establish a cyber/physical security countermeasure infrastructure that protects large-scale supply chains, including IoT systems and services as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, and to enable the incorporation of this infrastructure into actual supply chains in order to strengthen our IoT-based society`s defenses against cyber threats.

■ Research and development themes

(A) Research and development of technologies for trust creation and verification

This item involves enhancing the security of individual IoT devices and services. Research and development will be conducted on technology for creating and verifying trustworthiness to ensure the security of various IoT systems and services as well as the overall supply chain.

(B) Research and development of technology for building and distributing a chain of trust

Research and development will be conducted on technology to build a chain of trust for IoT systems/services and procurement/construction. This will enable information to be distributed in a secure manner and ensure that security is maintained in various social infrastructures and services as well as wide-ranging supply chains.

(C) Research and development of technology for verifying and maintaining a chain of trust

Research and development will be conducted on technology that makes it possible to verify and maintain the safe operation of a chain of trust for IoT systems and services and supply chains.
