Research for the Development and Practical Application of Next-Generation Aircraft for Decarbonization

Project overview

Project period: FY2024 to FY2024, budget: 490 million yen (FY2024)

NEDO will conduct research necessary for the embodiment of future projects to be implemented in accordance with the roadmap for commercial aircraft established under Japan's  Strategy of Aircraft Industry (revised in April 2024). The goal of this research is to achieve independent and continuous growth in the domestic aircraft industry.

Research and Development

1. An investigation into the issues and methods related to enhancing capabilities needed to integrate domestically developed features and systems into aircraft and be certified

  • Investigating issues and technology methods required for the next generation carbon-neutral aircraft
  • Examining the changes required in airframe structure, systems, and engines and their impact on aircraft
  • Investigating the possible market size that Japanese advanced technologies can address
  • Studying the challenges faced in the business environment

2. A study that analyzes and outlines the effects of various carbon neutral technologies to assess the potential impact of GX (Green Transformation) investments on the domestic aircraft industry

  • Quantitatively analyzing the effectiveness of CO2 emission reduction technologies
  • Studying the environmental impact of carbon-neutral technologies
  • Forecasting and analyzing the market size of manufacturing industries that are expected to grow
  • Analyzing the feasibility of introducing carbon-neutral aircraft produced through international collaborative development (including measures for successful introduction)

3. A study of detailed implementation items for each project based on the roadmap established under the Strategy of Aircraft Industry

  • Calculating the investment effect for each project timeline
  • Specifying detailed implementation items for the roadmap
