Demonstration project on a large-scale hydrogen supply chain system
In the field of storage batteries, NEDO is carrying out research and development on all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries and other types of innovative batteries which surpass the performance of current lithium-ion batteries. In the field of hydrogen energy, it is working to improve the performance of fuel cells and minimize the costs of hydrogen refueling stations. It is also developing hydrogen-based electricity generation to meet broadly expanding demand for hydrogen. To support this eff ort, NEDO is developing large-scale hydrogen supply chains from overseas and energy system technology that uses renewable energy.

For widespread use of renewable energy, storage batteries, EVs, and other distributed energy resources, NEDO is aiming to construct an advanced system that can control the electric power supply and demand balance by utilizing resources not just on the supply side but also at demand side entities such as residential homes and commercial offi ces. NEDO is also conducting research and development projects on grid technology in order to realize such a scenario and is also conducting demonstration projects in various environments around the world in order to establish a new energy system from both technical and business viewpoints.

With the aim of ensuring that renewables will be a sustainable power source, NEDO is working to reduce the cost of the following: power generation using PV, wind, ocean, and geothermal energy; use of biomass energy; and technology related to using renewable thermal energy. During FY2020, NEDO will move forward with its technology development and demonstration activities for cost reduction with a view to promoting greater use of renewable energy by creating a supply chain model for biojet fuel production and carrying out activities to reduce the cost of renewable thermal energy systems, such as those that use geothermal and solar heat.
