International Conference on Carbon Recycling to be Held

April 8, 2019
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)

On September 25, 2019, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will jointly hold an International Conference on Carbon Recycling. The conference will focus on “carbon recycling,” a system in which carbon dioxide, recognized as a source of carbon, is captured, then utilized and recycled into a variety of carbon compounds, and will bring together stakeholders from industry, academia and government from worldwide. Participants will share the latest knowledge, deliberate on potential for international collaboration, and discuss challenges to effectively promoting innovation for carbon recycling.

1.Outline and purpose

To achieve the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050, technologies involving capture, storage and utilization of carbon dioxide are considered promising options, and as such, innovation within these technologies are vitally important. From this viewpoint, in February 2019, the Japanese government embraced the concept of “carbon recycling”, a system in which carbon dioxide, recognized as a source of carbon, is captured, then utilized and recycled into a variety of carbon compounds. Innovation in carbon recycling technologies and systems are expected to contribute to addressing at least two significant challenges which the world faces: solving climate change issues and securing the stable supply of new resources.

In order to realize this innovation and system, it is important to collaborate with the industrial, academia and governmental sectors from all over the world in a synergistic manner. To this end, on September 25, 2019, NEDO and METI will jointly hold an International Conference on Carbon Recycling. The conference will bring together leading experts in all three sectors from around the world, and participants will share global innovative efforts and the latest knowledge, discuss and identify potential for international collaboration, and consolidate networks among participants. Moreover, participants will aim to enrich further discussions on the Roadmap for Carbon Recycling Technologies, a strategic plan scheduled to be compiled in June 2019, and on challenges to promoting innovation and other issues.
