New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) have commenced the demonstration operation of advanced digital solutions such as optimizing power generation and predicting the plant abnormalities before a failure through AI/big data analysis at the Mae Moh Thermal Power Plant Unit 11 and 13 (300 MW each) operated by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) since March 2021 under "Private Sector-Led Promotion of Low Carbon Technologies Program.

This demonstration project aims to improve power generation efficiency and reliability of power generation facilities and consequently to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to improvement of fuel efficiency. The Project also will quantify of greenhouse gas emission reduction through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and disseminate the information.

1.Overview

Electricity demand will be increasing with its economic growth in Kingdom of Thailand, on the other hand, the Thailand Government is now faced with challenge to improve power generation efficiency and reliability in order to ensure its energy security and global warming countermeasures. Under these backgrounds, NEDO and the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand (MOE) agreed and exchanged the Letter of Intent (LOI) to carry out the demonstration project*1 for improving energy efficiency of the entire power plant and optimizing its operation in February 2020. In parallel, Marubeni, the consignee of the demonstration project and EGAT concluded the Implementation Agreement (IA) and proceed with the design/development of advanced digital solutions*2 through AI/big data analysis. Subsequently, the demonstration operation for the Mae Moh Thermal Power Plant Unit 11 and 13 (300 MW each) operated by EGAT has commenced by introducing the "advanced digital solutions” for optimizing power generation since March 2021. The "advanced digital solutions” consists of three solutions. First is Thermal Efficiency Optimization Solution which provides guidance to improve the performance of equipment by analyzing the efficiency and degree of degradation in order to improve the entire plant. Second is Boiler Combustion Optimization Solution which has Al algorithms to improve boiler combustion and operation (including optimization of soot blower*3 operation). Third is Anomaly Detection Solution which has Al algorithms to analyze big data on the operating status of power generation facilities to detect abnormalities before a failure or accident. This demonstration project aims to improve power generation efficiency in the entire power plant and reliability of power generation facilities and consequently to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to improvement of fuel efficiency. The Project also will quantify of greenhouse gas emission reduction through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) *4 and disseminate the information.

3.Future Plans

This demonstration project will be conducted by the end of February 2023 and the effectiveness of "advanced digital solutions” will be verified including the quantification of greenhouse gas emission reduction. Based on the demonstration project results, NEDO and Marubeni will seek to disseminate the digital solution technologies and continue to contribute to prevention of the global warming for Thailand and other ASEAN countries.

【Notes】

*1 Demonstration project
Project name:Program to Facilitate Private Sector-Led Promotion of Low-Carbon Technology Overseas / Program to Promote Market Creation Using Low-Carbon Technology / Demonstration Project on Improved Power Generation using Digital Technologies at the MAE MOH Power Plant
Project period:FY2019~FY2022
*2 Digital solutions
Digital solutions are designed and developed to improve the performance of power plant by automatically acquiring and analyzing the power plant data.
*3 Soot blower
The Soot blower is a system for removing the soot that is deposited on the boiler tube during combustion.
*4 Joint Credit Mechanism: The JCM is a system that Japanese companies conduct a project in cooperation with local partner companies in partner countries and evaluate its contribution to GHG emission reductions in a quantitative manner, in which the results of the reduction are appropriately utilized for each reduction targets by partner countries and Japan respectively according to their respective contributions to the reduction.
