1. Program description

(1) Summary

The Moonshot Research and Development Program, coordinated by the Cabinet Office of Japan, was established to promote ambitious research and development based on bold ideas that are not just extensions of conventional technologies, with the aim of stimulating disruptive innovation in Japan.

As a research promotion organization engaged in the Moonshot Research and Development program and taking into account the Moonshot Goals determined by the Cabinet Office's Council for Science, Technology and Innovation and the R & D concepts formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, NEDO will pursue ambitious R & D activities to achieve Moonshot Goal 4: Realization of sustainable resource circulation to recover the global environment by 2050.

Specifically, with regard to substances that spread widely into the environment or exist in low concentration, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and marine plastic litter, ambitious R & D projects are being sought to develop technologies which will enable to recover such substances and convert them into valuable materials or to decompose or detoxify the substances.

(2) Program period

The period shall be maximum ten years from FY2020.

(3) Regarding other Moonshot Goals

The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) is responsible for carrying out activities related to the following Moonshot Goals: Moonshot Goal 1-- Realization of a society in which humans beings can be free from limitations of body, brain, space, and time by 2050; Moonshot Goal 2—Realization of ultra-early disease prediction and intervention by 2050; Moonshot Goal 3—Realization of AI robots that autonomously learn, adapt to their environment, evolve in intelligence and act alongside human beings, by 2050; and Moonshot Goal 6—Realization of a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer that will revolutionize economy, industry, and security by 2050. Another research and development organization will be responsible for Moonshot Goal 5—Creation of the industry that enables sustainable global food supply by exploiting unused biological resources by 2050.

Please note that information on this page pertains solely to Moonshot Goal 4 for which NEDO is the responsible organization.
