June 4, 2019

On May 30, 2019, NEDO, in collaboration with the U.S. non-profit organizations SRI International and Silicon Valley Robotics, held a robotics conference in Menlo Park, California, entitled "The Rise of the Robots."

In his opening remarks, NEDO President Hiroshi Oikawa expressed his hope that the conference would bring forth good examples of how robots developed in Japan and the United States can be used to solve problems around the world. An executive committee member of the World Robot Summit introduced the summit exhibition and competition scheduled to be held in Japan during 2020 which is being co-hosted by NEDO and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The conference featured panel discussions and presentations by leading Japanese and U.S. experts on topics such as robot development strategies, investment trends in the robotics business, and achieving commercialization from R&D. In addition, pitch presentations were made by robotics-focused startups and an exhibition area was set up with more than 20 companies from Japan and the United States displaying robots. Over 400 participants attended the conference, indicating the high level of interest in Japanese robotics technologies and robotics-related companies.
