Second Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting Held in Tokyo

On September 25, 2019, NEDO and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) co-hosted the second Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting in Tokyo.

During the ministerial session in the morning, representatives from 35 countries, regions, and organizations with high interest in global hydrogen energy utilization, provided updates regarding their activities related to the Tokyo Statement released at the first Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting which indicated directions for future hydrogen energy policy measures.

During the session for industry and international organization in the afternoon, NEDO Chairman Hiroaki Ishizuka provided opening remarks where he noted increasing global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, and observed that, as a result, "renewable energy" and "hydrogen" have become keywords around the world. Chairman Ishizuka also noted the significance of holding the second Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting, which brought together high-level representatives of more than 30 countries, regions, and organizations.

Later in the day, representatives of organizations, such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE), as well as leading industry representatives from around the world, provided presentations on the latest global developments and prospects for expanding the use of hydrogen in four areas: cross-cutting, mobility, supply chains, and sector integration. In addition, in light of the Global Action Agenda announced at the ministerial session, which provides guidelines for national actions, a panel discussion took place to consider initiatives each sector should pursue in the future.
