METI State Minister Makihara Visits Site of Osaki CoolGen Project

December 24, 2019

On December 13, 2019, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry MAKIHARA Hideki visited the site of the integrated coal gasification fuel cell combined cycle (IGFC*1) demonstration project, known as the "Osaki CoolGen Project," in Osakikamijima-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture. In order to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired thermal power plants, this demonstration project integrates IGFC technology, considered the ultimate technology for high-efficiency power generation, with CO2 capture technology. The project aims to improve the efficiency of coal-fired thermal power generation and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

At the demonstration site, commissioning are being carried out for the second stage of the demonstration for oxygen-blown integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC*2) with CO2 capture, furthermore preparations are underway for carrying out the demonstration's third stage, IGFC with CO2 capture. NEDO will continue to contribute to the realization of innovative coal-fired thermal power generation to reduce CO2 emissions in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and other relevant organizations.
