NEDO AI & ROBOT NEXT Symposium Held in Tokyo

On January 16-17, 2020, the NEDO AI & ROBOT NEXT Symposium was held at the Shinjuku LUMINE 0 event space in Tokyo. The symposium focused on NEDO projects aimed at realizing artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies that will be beneficial to society.

The symposium was organized for the purpose of reviewing the R&D results and considering the future prospects for two NEDO projects. The first project, Development of Core Technologies for Next-Generation AI and Robotics, promotes both R&D for innovative basic technologies that are not merely extensions of existing AI and robotics technologies as well as the social implementation of AI technologies. The second project, Realization of Smart Society by Applying Artificial Intelligence Technologies, is pursuing R&D and demonstrations that make use of current R&D infrastructure, sensor technologies developed for data acquisition, and AI modules.

The symposium featured keynote speeches by Dr. URAMOTO Naohiko, President of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, and Prof. ASADA Minoru, President of the Robotics Society of Japan. At the symposium venue, Dr. TSUJII Junichi, Project Leader of the two NEDO projects and Director of NAIST/AIRC, introduced achievements realized by AI technologies. More than 40 project participants also made presentations regarding project results and engaged in lively discussions with symposium attendees.

At the exhibition hall, project participants displayed 60 posters describing the latest research results and 11 robots equipped with next-generation artificial intelligence were displayed. More than 450 attendees representing various companies and universities participated in the symposium, indicating the high level of interest in AI and robotics technologies.
