NEDO and METI Hold Conference on Evaluations and Future Challenges for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Projects

June 25, 2019

From June 17 to 21, 2019, NEDO and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) jointly held a week-long conference regarding evaluations and future challenges for hydrogen and fuel cell projects.

At the plenary session, presentations were made regarding the International Energy Agency's Hydrogen Report and R&D trends for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in the United States and the European Union. In addition, Japan's strategic roadmap for hydrogen and fuel cells and NEDO's work in this field were introduced. Subsequent to the plenary session, presentations describing NEDO projects and user industry challenges were provided on four topics: hydrogen supply chain, hydrogen power generation/power-to-gas, hydrogen refueling station, and hydrogen/fuel cells.

Following these presentations, the progress of current NEDO projects was evaluated and future challenges were identified during panel discussions. On the final day of the conference, based on discussions on each topic, priority areas for technology development were identified, and industry, academia, and government representatives indicated they would work together while also collaborating with international partners. Conference discussions also demonstrated the need to work on the formulation of a technology development strategy to realize the goals delineated in the strategic roadmap for hydrogen and fuel cells.
