Clean Coal Day International Symposium 2019 Held in Tokyo

September 17, 2019

On September 9-10, 2019, NEDO co-hosted the Clean Coal Day International Symposium 2019 together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL), and the Japan Oil, Gas, and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).

At the opening of the symposium, the Director General of NEDO’s Environment Department introduced NEDO projects being carried out on integrated coal gasification fuel cells (IGFCs) and carbon capture and storage (CCS). He also described NEDO’s role in relation to the importance of fostering disruptive innovation to develop technologies, such as carbon recycling, to address global environmental problems.

During the symposium, presentations on national and regional energy policy trends in Asia were given by government officials from major coal-producing/consuming countries and by representatives of relevant international organizations such as the International Energy Agency. In addition, representatives of the U.S. state of Wyoming and the Australian state of Victoria made presentations introducing a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Project and a Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain Pilot Project. Discussions at the symposium focused on the necessity of international collaboration for solving problems related to climate change.

In addition, Dr. Akira Fujishima, Distinguished Professor at the Tokyo University of Science, provided a special lecture regarding his research on photocatalysis technology, which is receiving attention as an example of disruptive innovation related to the development of carbon recycling technologies.

Over the course of two days, more than 650 Japanese and overseas government, academia, and business representatives participated in the symposium and engaged in lively discussions.
