Ceremony Held to Commemorate Start of Operations for Power Grid Protection System Demonstration Project in Poland

December 4, 2019

NEDO, together with Hitachi, Ltd., Hitachi Chemical Co., Ltd., and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, is carrying out a demonstration project in Poland on a smart grid technology solution comprised of a power grid protection system and a hybrid battery energy storage system. The power grid protection system, installed in the load dispatching center of the state-owned transmission system operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A., has begun operations.

In this project, by introducing a power grid protection system, it will be possible to reduce the capacity of existing transmission lines reserved for accidental situations, and increase the amount of renewable energy sources that can be connected. In this way, the project can help optimize plant and equipment investments for Poland’s electric power infrastructure, and help Poland achieve its 2030 target of 32 percent for the introduction of renewable energy sources as stipulated under a European Union directive.

On December 2, 2019, a ceremony was held in Warsaw to commemorate the start of operations for the power grid protection system. The ceremony was held to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Poland. Attendees included the Ambassador of Japan to Poland, H.E. Tsukasa Kawada, and General Director Tomasz Trautsolt of the Polish Ministry of State Assets, as well as other stakeholders associated with the project.
