State Minister for Reconstruction Visits Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field

July 14, 2020

On July 10, 2020, State Minister for Reconstruction YOKOYAMA Shinichi visited the 10 MW hydrogen production unit, one of the largest in the world, installed at the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R) located in Namie Town of Fukushima Prefecture.

Using FH2R as a base for activities, NEDO, Toshiba ESS, Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., and Iwatani Corporation are promoting the development of technologies to realize a power-to-gas system, including technologies for power grid adjustment capability in anticipation of a significant expansion in the use of renewable energies, and technologies for the production, storage, and supply of clean and low-cost hydrogen.

Demonstration operations will be carried out at FH2R in the future where hydrogen production and storage is combined with power grid supply-demand adjustments, and optimal operations control technologies will be verified. In addition, as part of the demonstration operations, hydrogen produced at FH2R will be supplied to users in Fukushima Prefecture and elsewhere.
