METI Minister Visits Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier

September 4, 2020

On September 2, 2020, NEDO Chairman ISHIZUKA Hiroaki accompanied the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry KAJIYAMA Hiroshi on his visit to Kobe to inspect hydrogen-related and other facilities installed under the NEDO project Development of Technologies for Realizing a Hydrogen Society. Also participating in the visit were representatives of entities implementing the project, including the President and Chief Executive Officer of Kawasaki Heavy Industries HASHIMOTO Yasuhiko, the Mayor of Kobe HISAMOTO Kizo, and the President of Iwatani Corporation MAJIMA Hiroshi.

Minister Kajiyama toured various facilities, including the world's first liquefied hydrogen carrier, the "Suiso Frontier,"* which transports liquefied hydrogen produced overseas using underutilized resources to Japan, the Kobe LH2 Terminal, and a 100% hydrogen-fueled dry low-NOx gas turbine that uses hydrogen as fuel to supply heat and electricity to the local community. During the visit, Chairman Ishizuka explained the role and importance of hydrogen in relation to efforts to address global warming and described the current status of NEDO projects related to hydrogen technology development.

*Note: The carrier’s hull was developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The 75-ton liquefied hydrogen storage tank for marine transport installed on the carrier was developed under the NEDO project.
