METI Minister Visits Site of Osaki CoolGen Project

September 7, 2020

On September 3, 2020, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry KAJIYAMA Hiroshi visited the site of the integrated coal gasification fuel cell combined cycle demonstration project, known as the "Osaki CoolGen Project," being implemented in Osakikamijima-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture, as well as the adjacent site for a planned CO2 utilization R&D and demonstration base.*1

The Osaki CoolGen Project aims to improve the efficiency of coal-fired power generation and substantially reduce CO2 emissions by combining IGFC*2, considered the ultimate in high-efficiency power generation technology, with CO2 capture and separation technologies.

In addition, in line with the Japanese government's environmental innovation strategy and other initiatives, NEDO started preparations at the same site in August 2020 to establish a CO2 utilization R&D and demonstration base.

During Minister Kajiyama's visit, Chairman Ishizuka provided a presentation on NEDO's carbon recycling technology development activities and its efforts to create the new demonstration base in Osakikamijima, and voiced his hope that the base would become a nexus for the business and research communities that contributes to the steady industrialization of carbon recycling.
