31st Clean Coal Day International Symposium (2022) Held in Tokyo

September 12, 2022

On September 5-6, 2022, NEDO co-hosted the 31st Clean Coal Day International Symposium (2022) together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL), and the Japan Oil, Gas, and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC). The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format with in-person participation at Toranomon Hills in Tokyo.

On September 6, NEDO Executive Director WADA Takashi provided welcoming remarks where he introduced energy policies related to Japan’s goal of realizing carbon neutrality by 2050. Executive Director Wada also described a wide range of NEDO initiatives aimed at realizing carbon neutrality, such as the recently established Green Innovation Fund, as well as technology development efforts NEDO has been pursuing for many years in the field of thermal power generation.

Director General SUZUKI Kyoichi of the NEDO Environment Department then provided a keynote speech titled “Carbon Recycling Technology at NEDO” where he highlighted various NEDO activities related to the development of carbon recycling technologies, including projects on the separation/capture and transportation of CO2, methanation, paraxylene conversion, and carbonate concrete products. Director General Suzuki also described the Osaki CoolGen Project being carried out in the town of Osakikamijima, Hiroshima Prefecture, and a NEDO demonstration project related to the development of technology for ammonia co-firing power generation.

The symposium featured speakers from major coal-producing countries such as Germany, the United States, China, Australia, India, and Indonesia, as well as representatives of international organizations such as the World Coal Association and the ASEAN Centre for Energy, and experts from relevant industry organizations, companies, and academia.

Many people in overseas locations participated in the symposium virtually and the hybrid format facilitated lively discussions and Q&A sessions.
