October 14, 2022

On October 5-6, 2022, the ninth annual meeting of the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF), co-hosted by NEDO and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, was held in Tokyo and streamed online. This year’s meeting took place in conjunction with Tokyo GX Week, a series of ten international meetings addressing energy and environmental issues.

Under the theme of “Low-Carbon Innovation in a Time of Crises,” this year’s meeting was attended by approximately 1600 people representing 87 countries and regional organizations. During the 15 plenary and technology sessions, which included the participation of many young people, discussions focused on innovations expected to accelerate efforts to address climate change by 2030, such as policy innovations, technologies for CO2 removal, development of hydrogen and synthetic fuels for the thermal and transportation sectors, as well as innovations to promote reliable supplies of critically important metals and minerals.

During the meeting, the following side events also took place: the NEDO Moonshot R&D Program led a discussion of the CO2 balance and outlook relevant to the program’s efforts to promote the development of direct air capture and utilization (DAC-U) technologies; the NEDO Green Innovation Fund described efforts to promote carbon neutrality in global supply chains; and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) co-hosted a discussion regarding efforts to promote decarbonization in the industrial sector that also address the needs of developing/emerging countries.

In his closing remarks, NEDO Chairman ISHIZUKA Hiroaki noted that NEDO would strengthen its ongoing efforts to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the world.
