February 28, 2023

On February 6, NEDO held a public event in California (CA) to report the results of the "Demonstration Project Testing Storage Battery Operation for Both Electricity Transmission and Distribution in California, USA".

This demonstration project conducted in San Diego, CA aims to solve the challenges in power transmission and distribution networks bracing for the surge of renewable energy introduction by implementing and operating the Redox Flow Batteries (RF Batteries) that Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (Sumitomo Electric) has developed. And another goal of the project is to enhance the resilience of power systems by applying RF Batteries-powered microgrid technology.

Co-hosted by NEDO and GO-Biz (Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development), with whom NEDO has signed MOU for the demonstration project, the event was successful and well received by 160 participants. In addition to the reports on the demonstration results, a panel discussion was held with experts from both the US and Japan on long-duration energy storage technology.

NEDO President OIKAWA extended his gratitude to GO-Biz and SDG&E (San Diego Gas & Electric Company) as well as Sumitomo Electric, who was commissioned by NEDO, for their cooperation in organizing the event and delivered his opening address underlining a desire to advance further cooperation with the State of California to achieve carbon neutrality.

After the event, 100 people visited the installation site of the RF battery equipment during a site tour held on the same day.
