NEDO held “Natural Hydrogen Workshop in Japan” jointly with JAPT, and JOGMEC with nearly 500 participants in the world
February 20, 2025
NEDO held the "Natural Hydrogen Workshop in Japan" on February 14, 2025 at Haseko-Kuma Hall, Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo, jointly organized by the Japanese Association for Petroleum Technology (JAPT) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), supported by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
In the first part, Dr. Geoffrey Ellis of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Dr. Douglas Wicks of the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) presented natural hydrogen activities in the United States.
In the second part, Japanese researchers shared their research activities on the formation and migration mechanisms of natural hydrogen in the subsurface, and finally the potential of natural hydrogen in Japan was discussed in a panel discussion.
A total of nearly 500 people from 12 countries participated in the workshop both in person and online, from various private companies and research institutes. NEDO announced a public call for proposals on geologic hydrogen as part of NEDO's new Frontier Incubation Project last month. It is expected that these events provide as an opportunity to expand the natural hydrogen community and stimulate R&D in Japan.
