Completion Ceremony of Pilot Facility for “Artificial Limestone” produced from CO2 and Waste Materials

June 19, 2025

As part of NEDO’s Green Innovation Fund Project titled “Development of Technology for Producing Concrete and Cement Using CO2 / Establishment of carbonation technology using various calcium sources”, Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. has constructed a pilot-scale facility for artificial limestone from recycled CO2 and waste materials at its Tochigi Plant in Sano, Tochigi.

A completion ceremony was held on June 16, 2025, featuring a tour of the facility. Dr. IIMURA Akiko, NEDO Executive Director, attended the event.

This project aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through the development of innovative technologies that efficiently and economically produce artificial limestone (calcium carbonate) from captured CO2 and waste materials.

Artificial limestone has the potential to contribute to decarbonization across a wide range of industries, including cement and concrete products, paper, plastics, and paints. Its early commercialization is highly anticipated.

NEDO will continue to support the social implementation of this technology.
